1. 수요동향

□ The rapid growth in the overall Nigeria economy has accentuated the need for improving infrastructure where Governments, development authorities and even private companies have begun investing in infrastructure development projects in different parts of the country.

□ However, construction sector in Nigeria has being experiencing good times for companies manufacturing construction machineries and equipments as well as those selling used and refurbished heavy equipment and machinery. The appreciable increase in real estate and construction activities in Nigeria has resulted in a substantial surge of demand for construction refurbished heavy equipments such as excavators, backhoe, industrial loaders, compact track loaders, cutting machines e.t.c.

□ 나이지리아 건설시장 규모

 ○ The construction machinery/equipments industry in Nigeria is worth USD$ 30 billion and above even though there is no statistics showing the exact trend and imports but it’s still undergoing a steady transformation by moving from a low volume, intensive use of equipment structure to high volume, specific use one which in the coming years.

 ○ In 2010 the construction industry is expected to be worth US$ 2.87 billion. This represents growth of 6.65% year on year (y-o-y). Road and rail projects are on the rise, contributing the major stimulus for growth over the forecast period and boosting industry value to US$ 7 billion by 2014 an impressive growth given the difficulties facing the country's infrastructure sector.

 ○ Different brands of excavator and other heavy equipment have been in used in the country with most of them having Agents/Dealers marketing the equipments and spare parts with branches all over the country. Some of the known brands are Toyota, Cat, John Deere, Case, Hitachi, Hyundai, Doosan,  Daewoo, Komatsu, Kobelco, JCB, Volvo e.t.c.

□ 주요 중장비 브랜드의 나이지리아 딜러

 ○ Available representatives are Caterpillar (cat) represented by ‘’Mantrac, Hitachi represented by HMD Nigeria, Fiat Kobelco represented by Scoa Plc, Komatsu represented by Panafrican Equipment e.t.c. American and European products has been the major suppliers of construction equipments in the Nigerian market dominating both New and used heavy equipments.

□ 나이지리아 진출 외국계 건설업체들은 본국에서 직접 중장비를 들여다 사용

 ○ Most of the major construction companies in Nigeria who are multinationals sometimes bring their equipment from their home country and they also have trained technicians and engineers to repairs the equipment in house. Refurbished and used equipments are therefore in high demand with a significant segment of this market in Nigeria is dominated by imports from Europe but the United States suppliers stand chances of competing successfully.

 ○ Nigeria has large expanse of undeveloped Land requiring road construction to link many parts of the country with other parts and construction of low cost housing to accommodate many of its city dwellers.

 ○ Also that many state governments are coming to terms with the importance of sticking to Master plans and town planning laws means that in coming years many large scale construction projects will be embarked upon.

□ 나이지리아 정부, 도로 등 인프라 확충 계획

 ○ Major infrastructure like good road networks, that will support development are lacking and hence is a major cause of inadequate foreign investments and this has prompted governments at both state and federal levels to embark on long term infrastructural projects. State and Federal governments are looking for alternative sources of revenue (non-oil based sources) like taxation which depends largely on available infrastructure.

 ○ Of recent, crude oil deposits have been found in some parts of Nigeria implying that very soon infrastructural work would begin in surrounding areas. However, this is also dependent on security as the Niger delta is highly notorious for security threats from Militants.

 ○ Telecommunications companies are always embarking on expansion or maintenance projects this affords many construction companies opportunities to maximize income. Infrastructural and Development Projects(Mega city project)
Most state governments have realized that foreign investment is only possible when an enabling environment such as one with sufficient infrastructure exists.

 ○ Of all places in Nigeria, real estate investors are taking position in prime locations like Ikeja, Lekki and Ikoyi constructing commercial and residential buildings like Luxury Apartment buildings, office buildings, Mini estates, Hotels and Event centers.

  - Ikeja(이케자), Lekki(레키), Ikoyi(이코이)는 모두 라고스의 비즈니스 및 거주 중심지역임.

 ○ Refuse collection and disposal has always been a problem in Lagos hence the government partnering with the private sector in managing refuse collection and disposal. Even at that, Lagos is still far from having efficient refuse collection and disposal centers.

 ○ In 2009, the value of excavator with HS Code 842959 imported into Nigeria from the National Bureau of Statistics amounted to about US$ 51million compared with US$ 30 million in 2010 and US$ 23million in 2011 showing the downward movement in the purchase of the item but there is a belief that 2012 will be higher than the previous years or about the same range.

3. 유통구조(Distribution Channel)

 ○ The best way to distribute any brand of heavy equipment in Nigeria is through the representatives or the dealers because they are already in the business and they know how best to introduce the product to the other agents, wholesaler. And they can also create more awareness via the available medias like radio, television and the print media.

4. 수입정책 및 관세(Import Policies and Tax)

 ○ There is no restriction whatsoever on the importation of used heavy equipments into the Nigeria but the Standard Organization of Nigeria(SON) who overseas product standards and regulates the standard of any product imported into the country, has warned importers to be careful of the machines they bring into the country.

 ○ To be able to export to Nigeria, the exporter will have to ask the importer about SONCAP product certificate if it is necessary for used heavy equipment or not but for new equipment SONCAP certificate from the SONCAP Office in Korea should is necessary and should be sent to the importer who will use the document for clearing of the product. The registration process which will be undertaken by the importer may take as long as six months but it actually depends on the importers follow-up and connections. The Importer will require certain documents most especially the Power of Attorney authorizing the Importer to register and sell these products in Nigeria.

 ○ These importers know and understand the registration procedure with SON and also how to obtain SONCAP Certification.

 ○ HS Code 8429.5900.00(Self–propelled bulldozers, excavators) has a 5% import duty level to be paid on clearing which makes it easier for the importers and also encourages them to import more.

5. 라고스 KBC 의견

□ Time needed for entry: six months ~ one year

 ○ The marketing of any new or existing excavator machine in the Nigerian market takes little time with strong determination of selling the products that is why most Importers and Dealers embark on road show promotion, advertisement and other forms of awareness campaign to push the product into the market.

 ○ Heavy equipment is an interesting market where if used or hired for a day or week in increases the revenue or income of the owner but he has to maintain the equipment against quick depreciations.

□ Target buyers:

 ○ Target buyers of Heavy equipments in Nigeria, are construction companies that are already dealers of other brands, private companies and state governments

□ KBC Opinion

 ○ We in KBC Lagos will want Korean company to liaise with the Nigeria buyers and negotiate well on the prices and quality so that they can have good business for the New Year. Presently, the Nigeria Government is the one that issue contacts and changes policy that sometimes favor the dealers. The price must be very competitive with other existing brands in Nigeria so as to also create a niche or market portion to the Korean company’s product.

 ○ Korean companies can enter the Nigeria market if they can start working and liaising with Korean companies in Nigeria from there the new brands can also be introduced into the market. Partnering with some existing companies many also create awareness to end users.
