1. Demand

□ TYRE MARKETS IN FINLAND

 ○ There were 3,036,618 passenger cars in the country on December 31st 2012, compared with 2,958,568 in the previous year. There were 375,059 light commercial vehicles (LCV) at the end of 2012, 128,080 heavy commercial vehicles (HCV) and 14,885 buses. On December 31st 2012 there were 3,554,642 vehicles altogether, which meant 97,717 more than on the corresponding date the year before.

 ○ There were 111,251 new passenger car registrations in 2012, which was about 12% less than the year before. First registrations of LCVs were 11,469 compared with 14,492 in the previous year. First registrations of HCVs numbered 3,252 and buses 533.

□ Sales statistics 2012

 ○ There were 3,036,618 passenger cars in the country on December 31st 2012, compared with 2,958,568 in the previous year.  ○ The product groups are the following: Passenger Car Summer tyres, Passenger Car Winter tyres, Light Commercial Vehicle Summer tyres, Light Commercial Vehicle Winter tyres, new Heavy Commercial Vehicle Tyres, retreaded Heavy Commercial Vehicle Tyres (client retreading and retreading on own casings), Agricultural machinery tyres and special rims.

 ○ The Association’s sales statistics of 2012 indicate that the after-market of summer tyres has increased by 2 % and the sales of winter tyres have decreased by 5 %. The statistics also indicate an increase by 4 % in the sales of summer tyres and the sales of winter tyres were on the same level as in 2011 for light commercial vehicles. The sales of retread heavy commercial vehicle tyres have decreased by 1 % and new HCV tyres have decreased by 4 %.

□ Retreading statistics 2010 - 2012

 ○ Statistics based on information provided by importers and manufacturers of retreading materials indicate that the number of car tyres retread increased from 89,072 to 90,169 in 2012. The number of HCV tyres given retreads in the same period in 2012 is 166,912.

□ Tyre markets 2012

 ○ About 1.3 Million new summer tyres are sold for passenger cars and some 1.7 Million new winter tyres. Light Commercial Vehicle tyres are sold at a rate of some 300.000 pieces comprising summer and winter tyres. New Heavy Commercial Vehicle (bus and truck) tyres are sold at a rate of 105 000 pieces annually.

 ○ During recent years Russia has took place as biggest country of origin for tyres. Still 10 years ago Russia wasn’t among biggest tyre exporters to Finland. Reason for Russian big share is that Nokian Renkaat has big factory in Russia (Tyre manufacturers association estimated 50% of Nokian tyres are manufactured in Russia already and 50% in Finland, but manufacturing is moving more to Russia). France and Germany have been traditionally strong in tyres and form Asian countries Korea and China are big suppliers and nowadays also Philippines which was not any major origin for tyres still 10 years ago.

 ○ Finland is also big tyre exporter because of Nokian Tyres (Nokian Renkaat Oyj). Export goes mainly to EU area and Russia.
